Our Story

Why we built ICONIC, and what we believe about portraits, AI, and the prints that hang on real walls.

Why we made ICONIC

For most of human history, having your portrait painted meant being a king, a saint, or a banker. The few thousand families wealthy enough to commission an oil painting bought an immortality the rest of us never had. Their grandchildren could see them. Ours can’t.

ICONIC exists to put that art back in regular people’s hands — at a price you can actually afford.

We didn’t set out to build “an AI app.” We set out to make portraits of the people, pets, and moments that matter to ordinary families look like they deserve to hang in a museum. AI was the only way to do that for the price of a nice dinner instead of the price of a used car.

How it works

You upload a photo. We turn it into a painting in the style of Van Gogh, Rembrandt, the Renaissance masters, anime, street art — over sixty styles in total. You can preview it for free. If you love it, we print it on archival canvas in a workshop in California or the Netherlands and ship it to your door, framed if you want it framed.

The whole thing takes about sixty seconds from photo to preview. Most of our customers order a print within five minutes.

What we believe

Honest AI.

Some companies in this space pretend their work is “hand-painted by master artists.” We don’t. Our portraits are made by AI, printed by humans, and we’ll never lie to you about which is which. That’s not a marketing line — it’s the only way to build something we’d be proud of in five years.

Style over speed.

The first wave of AI portrait apps optimized for novelty. The market is moving past that. What lasts is craft: the specific way Van Gogh’s brushstrokes move; how Caravaggio handles light. Most of our work, behind the scenes, is making one style work better — not adding the hundredth.

Memory matters more than fashion.

A surprising number of our customers come to us after losing a pet. We didn’t expect that when we started. We’ve shipped more pet memorial portraits this year than any other product, and we treat each one like the irreplaceable thing it is.

The print is the point.

A portrait that lives only on a phone is a screensaver. A portrait that hangs above a couch is a story your kids will repeat about you. We push hard on print quality because the wall is what makes this real.

Where we are now

We started shipping in 2025. We’re a small team — small enough that the same person who answers your support email might also be the one who reviewed the print before it left the warehouse. We’ve made portraits for pets, parents, partners, and friends across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and most of Western Europe.

The road ahead is long. We want better styles, faster turnarounds, more sizes, more frame finishes, and a workflow that handles families and group photos as well as it handles single subjects. We’re not in a hurry to be a billion-dollar company. We’re in a hurry to make something good enough that twenty years from now, the print on your wall is one of the few things you didn’t replace.

Try it.

We’ll show you what your photo looks like as a painting before you decide anything. No account. No card. No pressure.
